Today’s modern quality of living necessitates the use of energy. Lighting at night, water circulation pumps and vertical mobility are some examples where energy is needed to support quality living.
The energy consumption pattern in HDB residential buildings differs greatly from normal commercial buildings, both in terms of energy consumers as well as peak occupied hours. As HDB residential buildings are naturally ventilated, lightings and lifts are the main energy consumer. In addition, peak power consumption takes place at night time.
Whilst energy usage is unavoidable in these aspects, technology can help to improve the efficiency in energy usage. HDB has since carried out pilot implementations of the Energy SAVE programme, where existing estates are ‘modernised’ to be more energy efficient. This includes solutions such as installing solar panels on roof tops, switching off some lifts during off-peak periods and using LED lighting solutions at lift lobbies and common corridors. |
